How to Create Facebook Video Ads

A Facebook video ad is a paid video campaign created in Meta Ads Manager to reach a defined audience and drive a specific action. This guide covers the 7-step setup.

For most businesses, Meta Ads Manager is a better choice than boosting a Facebook video post because it gives you more control over objectives, audiences, placements, budgets and tracking.

Meta supports video ads across Facebook placements, including Feed, Stories and Reels. You can use Advantage+ placements or choose placements manually at the ad set level.

Step 1: Prepare the Video Before Opening Ads Manager

Build the video around one advertising goal. Trying to explain everything in one ad usually weakens the message.

A Facebook video ad often follows this structure:

  1. Hook: Introduce the problem, result or offer immediately.
  2. Problem: Show what the target customer is dealing with.
  3. Solution: Demonstrate the product or service.
  4. Proof: Add a result, testimonial, demonstration or reason to believe.
  5. Call to action: Tell viewers what to do next.

Example Video Script

For a meal-delivery service:

"Still spending an hour deciding what to cook? Fresh meals arrive at your door in under 10 minutes. Choose this week's menu and get your first delivery for $20 off."

The video should show the meals, delivery process and offer. Do not rely only on narration.

Create Versions for Different Placements

Create a vertical 9:16 version for Facebook Reels and Stories. Keep important text, logos and product details inside the central safe area so interface elements do not cover them. Meta recommends vertical video, audio and safe-zone placement for Reels creative.

For Facebook Feed, consider a 4:5 or square version as well. Placement requirements can change, so check Meta's current Ads Guide before exporting the final files.

Step 2: Open Meta Ads Manager and Create a Campaign

Open Meta Ads Manager and select Create.

Choose the campaign objective that matches the action you want people to take:

Business goalSuitable campaign direction
Generate purchasesSales
Collect contact detailsLeads
Send people to a websiteTraffic
Promote an appApp promotion
Build awarenessAwareness
Encourage interactions or video engagementEngagement

Do not choose a video-view objective when the actual goal is sales. Meta will generally optimize delivery around the result selected at the campaign level, so the objective should reflect the action that matters to your business.

Step 3: Set the Audience, Budget and Schedule

At the ad set level, define:

  • Location
  • Age range
  • Language
  • Audience targeting
  • Budget
  • Start and end dates
  • Placements
  • Conversion destination or performance goal

For a new campaign, start with one clear audience and a manageable daily budget. Avoid changing the audience, budget and creative at the same time. Otherwise, you will not know which change affected performance.

Choose Advantage+ or Manual Placements

Advantage+ placements allow Meta to distribute the ad across eligible placements. Meta recommends this approach for Reels campaigns because it can include Facebook and Instagram Reels alongside other placements.

Choose manual placements when:

  • Your video only works in one format.
  • You need to exclude a placement.
  • Your landing page or offer does not suit a particular audience.
  • You have separate creative for Feed, Stories and Reels.

If you use manual placements, create a video version for each placement instead of forcing one horizontal video into every location.

Step 4: Build the Facebook Video Ad

At the ad level:

  1. Select the Facebook Page that should appear as the advertiser.
  2. Choose Create ad.
  3. Select Single image or video, or the equivalent video format shown in your account.
  4. Choose Add media.
  5. Upload your video.
  6. Select Use existing post if you want to promote a video already published on your Page.
  7. Add the primary text, headline and call-to-action button.
  8. Add the destination URL if the ad sends people to a website.

Meta's current Reels workflow supports uploading new creative and promoting an existing Reel. Meta also provides placement asset customization and Advantage+ creative options at the ad level.

Write the Ad Copy

Use the copy to clarify the offer. It does not need to repeat every word spoken in the video.

Primary text example:

Make weekday dinners easier with ready-to-cook meals delivered to your door. Choose from 20 weekly recipes and save $20 on your first box.

Headline example:

Get $20 Off Your First Box

Call to action:

  • Shop Now for ecommerce
  • Learn More for educational or service pages
  • Sign Up for lead generation
  • Book Now for appointments
  • Download for apps or resources

Use one main call to action. Multiple competing actions make the ad harder to understand.

Step 5: Add Captions, Branding and a Clear Thumbnail

The video should communicate its main message even when the viewer is not listening to the audio. Add readable captions and make sure the first frame identifies the product or problem.

Include:

  • Brand name or logo
  • Product or service
  • Main benefit
  • Offer, when relevant
  • Captions
  • Clear visual contrast
  • A recognisable opening frame

Do not place important text at the extreme top or bottom of a vertical video. Reels and Stories include interface elements that can cover those areas. Meta provides a safe-zone checker for Reels creative.

Step 6: Preview the Ad Before Publishing

Use the preview tool to check how the video appears in each selected placement.

Look for:

  • Cropped faces or products
  • Text hidden by buttons or interface elements
  • Captions that are too small
  • A missing thumbnail
  • Incorrect links
  • A call to action that does not match the landing page
  • Audio or video quality problems
  • Important information appearing too late

Click through the ad yourself. The landing page should load correctly on mobile and repeat the promise made in the video.

Step 7: Publish and Monitor Performance

Select Publish after reviewing the campaign, ad set and ad. Meta reviews advertisements before delivery, and that process can affect when the ad begins running.

Track the metrics that match your campaign objective:

ObjectiveImportant metrics
SalesPurchases, cost per purchase, conversion rate, return on ad spend
LeadsLeads, cost per lead, lead quality
TrafficLanding page views, cost per landing page view
AwarenessReach, impressions, frequency, video attention
EngagementThruPlays, watch time, reactions, comments and shares

Do not judge a sales campaign only by video views. A video can attract attention without producing profitable customers.

A Practical Facebook Video Ad Testing Plan

Start with three versions of the same offer:

  1. Problem-led hook: Focus on the customer's frustration.
  2. Product demonstration: Show how the product works.
  3. Result-led hook: Lead with the outcome.

Keep the audience, offer and landing page the same. Change only the video or opening hook so the test is easier to interpret.

After identifying the strongest video, test:

  • Short versus longer edits
  • Voice-over versus on-screen text
  • Customer testimonial versus product demonstration
  • Different headlines
  • Different offers
  • Different calls to action

Meta recommends testing creative made for Reels instead of assuming that one format will work equally well everywhere.

Should You Boost a Facebook Video Post or Use Ads Manager?

Use Boost Post when you want a quick way to increase the reach of an existing Facebook video.

Use Meta Ads Manager when you need:

  • A specific sales, lead or traffic objective
  • More detailed audience control
  • Multiple ad variations
  • Placement control
  • Conversion tracking
  • Structured testing
  • Campaign-level budget management

A boosted post is quicker. Ads Manager is the better choice for performance marketing.

The strongest Facebook video ads connect four things: the audience's problem, the opening seconds of the video, the offer and the next action. The editing software and camera matter less than that connection.
