The recommended way to add Meta Pixel to Shopify is through the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel. This connects an existing Meta Pixel or creates a new one without requiring JavaScript in your Shopify theme.
The setup uses three customer data-sharing levels: Standard, Enhanced, and Maximum.
| Task | Shopify location |
|---|---|
| Install the Meta integration | Sales channels → Shopify App Store |
| Open pixel settings | Sales channels → Facebook & Instagram → Settings |
| Enable tracking | Share data settings |
| Connect or create a pixel | Customer data-sharing |
| Choose a tracking level | Standard, Enhanced, or Maximum |
| Check whether it works | Meta Ads Manager after customer activity occurs |
Install the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel from your Shopify admin.
Shopify treats Facebook and Instagram by Meta as a sales channel. It therefore appears under Sales channels, rather than necessarily under Settings → Apps.
If the sales channel is already installed, open it from:
Shopify admin → Sales channels → Facebook & Instagram
Open Share data settings inside the Facebook and Instagram sales channel, then enable Customer data-sharing.
Shopify requires customer data-sharing to be enabled before you connect a Meta Pixel to your online store.
Choose Standard, Enhanced, or Maximum based on your privacy, consent, analytics, and advertising requirements.
A higher setting gives Meta more information for matching and advertising activity, but it also involves sharing more customer data. Review your privacy and consent requirements before selecting a level.
Connect an existing pixel from the Customer data-sharing section, or create one if your business does not have a Meta Pixel.
You can also create a Meta Pixel in Meta Ads Manager and return to Shopify to connect it.
After confirmation, Shopify connects the pixel to your online store. The pixel sends customer activity data to Meta for advertising measurement and campaign optimization.
Visit your store, perform a customer action, and then check the connected pixel in Meta Ads Manager.
Newly connected pixels may not show data immediately. Customer activity must occur before data appears in Meta's reporting tools.
No. Use one main installation method for the same Meta Pixel.
If you previously pasted Meta Pixel code into your Shopify theme, remove that code before connecting the pixel through Facebook and Instagram by Meta. Two installations can send duplicate events and make advertising reports inaccurate.
To remove manually added code:
theme.liquid.<head> and </head> tags. Also check for other installations from:
Another app or advertising provider may send the same event more than once. Shopify recommends checking for duplicate or incorrect data when another integration is involved.
Usually, use the Facebook and Instagram by Meta integration instead of Shopify's Custom Pixels area.
Shopify recommends using an integrated app pixel when one is available. Custom pixels require more technical setup, and Meta's pixel SDK does not automatically send Shopify customer events unless the pixel is initialized and subscribed to those events correctly.
Use a custom pixel only when the native Meta integration does not support a tracking requirement that your store needs.
Check the connection, customer activity, duplicate installations, and privacy settings.
theme.liquid.Shopify's privacy controls can affect whether pixel data is collected or shared. This includes situations where a customer opts out of data sharing or targeted advertising.
For most Shopify stores, use Facebook and Instagram by Meta → Share data settings → Customer data-sharing → Connect or create Meta Pixel → Confirm, then test the pixel in Meta Ads Manager.
