Running Facebook Ads? Never lose money because of these 3 simple mistakes ever again

Who hasn’t messed up something in their Facebook Ads? At best you’re losing valuable insights, at worst you’re pouring money down the drain! Broken pixels, false pixel events, missing UTM parameters. At times we might even use an old URL or take down a landing page that we didn’t know was still getting traffic from some ancient retargeting campaign. We’ve all been there – but enough is enough.

Here are three automation recipes that help you make all of the above a thing of the past.

Step 1: Check your active ads for broken links

In Facebook Ads, links come in various forms these days: in a simple link ad, behind a video, on carousel cards or even customized for each placement through an asset feed.

When setting up your ads, Facebook warns you if a link you entered is broken or otherwise leads to a 404 page. Though, once an ad is set up and has been running for some time, it’s easy to forget what exact landing page you used or what product page you sent the visitors who clicked on the ad. Often enough, a product may go out of stock or we stop advertising it completely.

Websites can break or go down, so you want to make sure that you aren't spending money in ads with bad links.

At kitchn.io, we solve this through an automation recipe we call Ads Link Uptime Monitor. It helps you automatically monitor all of your active ads for broken links – no matter the ad format.

Step 2: Automatically check that your Facebook pixel is active for all ads

There are two major mistakes that happen with Facebook pixels. 1) Someone messes up the implementation on your site or 2) you didn’t activate the pixel for your new ad in the first place.

Here, we will only look at the latter example: Simply forgetting to activate that little button in the tracking bit of the ad.

Too many tears have been cried over this checkbox

It’s an easy enough mistake to make that we pay dearly: no off-site conversion data for hours, days, weeks? At kitchn.io, we solve this through an automation recipe we call Ads Pixel Tracking Monitor. It helps you automatically monitor all of your active or pending ads for missing Facebook pixel tracking. If an issue is found, you’ll get notified via Slack with a link to the affected ads.

Step 3: Get notified if someone messed up your UTM parameters

Oh UTM parameters. A love-hate-relationship for all marketers out there since the early days of online marketing. We need them to get the insight we need and tackle things like multi-channel attribution and cross-device tracking. But it just is so damn easy to make a mistake. In all honesty, UTM parameters are probably still the most important way of transferring campaign information to our web analytics solutions or data warehouses.

When working in teams or setting up hundreds of ads each week, every now and then a little typo gets in our way or we forget to add those important little URL parameters alltogether.

At kitchn.io, we solve this through an automation recipe we call UTM Parameter Monitor. It helps you automatically monitor all of your active or pending ads for wrong or missing UTM parameters. If an issue is found, you’ll get notified via Slack with a link to the affected ads.
